Corrections Canada is having a close look at its procedures after three convicts escaped, one after another, from its Laval penal facilities in less than two
\nweeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very unusual,\u201d spokesman Serge Abergel told
\nThe Suburban<\/i> in an interview. \u201cDuring the past 12
\nmonths there were only six escapes in the entire
\nQuebec region out of a total inmate population of
\nabout 3,000.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very rare occurrence that we are taking
\nvery seriously,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> succeeded in recapturing the first
\nescapee, Alex Michaud-Robitaille, Oct. 4, in Lavaltrie,
\nQuebec, after he disappeared from its Sainte Anne des
\nPlaines prison five days earlier.<\/p>\n

They are still on the lookout for fugitives Philippe
\nPelletier, 32, who was reported missing from the
\nCorrections Canada’s Mont\u00e9e St. Fran\u00e7ois prison Oct.
\n3; as well as Gilles Meloche, 56, who vanished from the
\nsame facility, Oct. 7.\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
\nPelletier was almost two-years through a six-year
\nsentence for theft, possession of a weapon and other
\noffenses. Meloche had been serving an indeterminate
\nsentence since 1980, for second degree murder, attempted murder, forcible confinement, theft and armed robbery.<\/p><\/div>\n
\nHe had been assigned to increasingly lower-security
\ninstitutions as his rehabilitation progressed over the
\nyears.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly people who are the least dangerous are
\nassigned to minimum security facilities, so both individuals who remain at large are assessed as being of
\nlow risk to public safety,\u201d Abergel reassured.
\n\u201cCorrectional Service Canada is fully cooperating with
\nS\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> and Laval police to help them locate
\nthese individuals as rapidly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once caught, Corrections Canada policy specifies
\nthat escapees can be transferred to a higher-security
\nfacility. Prosecutors also have the option of laying
\nadditional criminal charges for escaping legal custody.<\/p>\n

Pelletier is 1.78 m tall, weighs 72 kg and has brown
\neyes, brown hair and a sun tattoo on his back. He also
\nhas a surgical scar on his abdomen and a scar on his
\nleft eyebrow.<\/p>\n

Meloche is 1.7 m tall, weighs 109 kg and has blue
\neyes, shaved brown hair and wears glasses with black
\nframes. He has a skull tattoo on his right arm, a heart
\ntattoo on the inside of his left arm, a genie tattoo on
\nthe top of his left arm and a scar on his left hand.<\/p>\n
