\nWestmount resident Tony Loffreda received the Queen
\nElizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal during a ceremony in Ottawa, Sept. 26.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSen. No\u00ebl Kinsella officially presented the medal during a
\nceremony in the Senate chamber on Parliament Hill. Senators Leo Housakos and
\nLarry Smith were also on hand for the occasion.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLoffreda earned the distinction for his exemplary support
\nof humanitarian causes. He is best known for his leadership in fundraising for
\nthe Montreal
\nCancer Institute, the Jewish General Hospital and the Kidney Foundation.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHowever the head of Royal Bank\u2019s commercial financial services for
\nWestern Quebec and the head of the national client group was given the name \u201cThe Rainmaker\u201d by The Suburban <\/i>editor Beryl Wajsman in a profile written last December highlighting Loffreda’s ability to help
\nraise millions of dollars for a much wider range of worthy causes.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThere are never enough hours, but it\u2019s important,\u201d Loffreda told The Suburban<\/i> in that story, which highlighted his philanthropy. He was remarking on a fundraiser to help brain-injured Canadian soldiers who had served in
\nAfghanistan.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLoffreda, who refers to himself as \u201cjust a kid from Ahuntsic\u201d, is
\nalso a strong supporter of Montreal International, the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration des chambres de commerce du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> and the John Molson
\nSchool of Business.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nCanada minted the Diamond Jubilee Medal to mark the 60th year of
\nQueen Elizabeth II\u2019s reign, as a way to recognize people who have made a
\nsignificant contribution to Canadians.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIn granting you this honour,\u201d Governor General David Johnston
\nwrote in a letter congratulating Loffreda, \u201cI thank you for your dedicated
\nservice to your peers, to your community and to Canada.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe contributions you have made to our nation are most commendable
\nand deserve our praise and admiration.\u201d<\/div>\n
