City crews will be going door-to-door,
\npicking up leaves from residential curbsides from Oct. 15-Nov. 16.<\/p>\n

Laval instituted the program to reduce
\nthe load on municipal landfill sites, by
\nredirecting the valuable organic material
\nto farmers who will use the leaves to fertilize their soil.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the program’s inception, Laval
\nhas sent some 14,333 tons of leaves to
\nlocal farmers,\u201d municipal spokeswoman Myriam Legault said in a statement. \u201cIt’s a
\nnatural and economical fertilizer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nResidents can simply deposit their
\nleaves in paper bags before 7 a.m., on the
\nday that their garbage is collected.
\nOfficials specified that plastic bags will not
\nbe accepted.<\/p>\n

Legault explained that citizens may also
\nbring their leaves to one of the neighbourhood
\ndrop-off centres listed in the environment
\nsection of the www.ville.laval.qc.ca<\/a> web site.<\/p>\n

\u201cPumpkins and bales of straw will also
\nbe collected during the door-to-door pick-up,\u201d she added, \u201cand are accepted at the
\nneighbourhood drop-off centres as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nLegault suggested that residents who
\nprefer to keep their leaves to take advantage of the nutrients stored in them, can
\ninstead shred them with their lawnmowers and spread them evenly over their
\nlawn, or work a thin layer of leaf mould
\ninto their gardens or flower beds.<\/p>\n

She noted that leaves can also be
\ndecomposed in home composters.\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\u201cIt’s advisable to dry them first in paper
\nor jute bags, or pierced plastic bags,\u201d
