\nsports and culture stadium will have to be built near
\nthe Montmorency Metro station.<\/p>\n
The decision was made during a special city council session, Oct. 12.<\/p>\n
Originally the facility was to be located on St.
\nMartin Boulevard east of highway 15. <\/p>\n
However, city
\nofficials cited engineering studies that found the soil
\non which it was to be built was unstable and contaminated.<\/p>\n
The city explained in a statement that it would have
\ntaken too much time and money to adhere Quebec
\nEnvironment Ministry guidelines at the original site.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe city of Laval is acting in a responsible fashion
\nboth to remain within the original budget envelope
\nand the original schedule,\u201d said Mayor Gilles
\nVaillancourt.<\/p>\n
The city signaled its intention to expropriate the
\nland needed for the stadium, which is currently held
\nby a company held by the FTQ Fonds de Solidarit\u00e9.
\n<\/i><\/p>\n
The facility is expected to serve as a 10,000-person
\narena that can be converted into a concert hall, a
\n2,500-seat Olympic rink and a community rink that
\ncan accommodate 500 spectators.<\/p><\/div>\n
