Gilles Meloche is back behind bars after
\nless than three days on the loose.
\nMontreal and Quebec provincial police
\narrested the convicted murderer Oct. 10,
\nafter he telephoned Le Canal nouvelles’<\/i>
\nhost Claude Poirier.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey call it an escape, but all I had to
\ndo was push on the door,\u201d Meloche
\nrecounted to the host of the television
\nnews channel’s broadcast Le n\u00e9gociateur.
\n<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI have tumors, but I don’t know
\nwhether they’re malignant,\u201d he told
\nPoirier. \u201cI’m not asking for anything. I
\njust want to stay on the outside until
\nChristmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am able to control my emotions,\u201d
\nassured the convict, who has been incarcerated for 32 years. \u201cI’ve really changed,
\nbut they don’t want to recognize it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meloche, 56, had been serving an indeterminate sentence since 1980, for second
\ndegree murder, attempted murder,
\nforcible confinement, theft and armed
\nrobbery when he vanished from Mont\u00e9e
\nSt. Fran\u00e7ois prison, Oct. 7.<\/p>\n

Though he had been assigned to
\nincreasingly lower-security institutions as his rehabilitation progressed over the
\nyears, Corrections Canada will probably
\ntransfer him to a higher-security facility
\nbecause of his flight. Prosecutors are also
\nconsidering whether to lay additional
\ncriminal charges for escaping legal custody.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nMeloche’s capture means that police
\nhave now returned to custody two of the
\nthree convicts who escaped in rapid succession from Laval prisons during a the
\nfirst week of October. Only Philippe
\nPelletier, 32, who escaped from the same
\nprison as Meloche, Oct. 3, remains at
\nlarge.<\/p>\n
