Facing falling revenue as patents on its popular drugs expire, Pfizer Canada announced, Oct. 28, that it plans to \u201celiminate approximately 11 per cent of its Canadian workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview, the company declined to specify how many of the nearly 600 employees at the company\u2019s head office in Kirkland will lose their jobs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be some impact in Kirkland,\u201d Rhonda O\u2019Gallagher told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cWe\u2019re not providing a regional or site breakdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

The drug firm\u2019s corporate communications director said that most people who are affected are involved in marketing selling the company\u2019s products to general practitioners. She added that although they report to the Kirkland-based primary care department, \u201cmany of them work remotely in the field across Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese were difficult decisions to take and we are committed to treat these employees fairly,\u201d O\u2019Gallagher continued. \u201cThey have received several weeks notice plus severance pay during the transition period.\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained that Pfizer recently lost patents on a number of drugs such as cholesterol reducer Lipitor\u2014the best selling drug in pharmaceutical history\u2014and Norvasc, a popular treatment for angina and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cPfizer remains very committed to the Montreal area and the province of Quebec,\u201d O\u2019Gallagher affirmed.<\/p>\n
