\nand Pont Viau earned a coveted five-star
\nrating, Oct. 23.<\/p>\n

The drinking water excellence program
\nknown as PEXEP awarded the distinction
\nto the two facilities for producing drinking
\nwater that exceeded government drinking
\nwater quality standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaval\u2019s water facilities employ leading-edge technology which enables Laval to
\nprovide the highest quality drinking water
\nin Quebec,\u201d enthused city spokeswoman
\nMyriam Legault in a statement.<\/p>\n

PEXEP was inspired by Bill Lauer of the
\nAmerican Water Works Association (AWWA), in Denver, Colorado. Lauer
\nfounded the Partnership for Safe Water in
\nthe United States in 1998.<\/p>\n

The partnership\u2019s mission is to improve
\nthe quality of drinking water delivered to
\ncustomers of public water supplies by optimizing system operations.<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe following year, AWWA met Quebec\u2019s
\nmunicipal affairs minister and helped the
\nprovince set up a similar program here.
\nKnown as R\u00e9seau environment,<\/i> it is effectively the Quebec branch of AWWA.<\/p>\n

It promotes drinking water protection
\nagainst microbiological contamination
\nthrough sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, and aims for water quality that
\nexceeds Canadian and American standards.<\/p><\/div>\n
