Hundreds of disgruntled protesters
\nrallied outside Laval\u2019s Ch\u00e2teau Royal
\nhotel on du Souvenir boulevard, Oct. 28,
\nto protest against a visit by Lebanon\u2019s
\nformer prime minister, General Michel
\nAoun and his son-in-law, Lebanon\u2019s
\nenergy minister Gibran Bassil.<\/p>\n

Laval police spokesman Franco di
\nGenova, told The Suburban<\/i> that dozens
\nof local peace officers deployed to the scene, \u201cafter the demonstration commenced around 8 p.m. About 200-250
\npeople protested outside peacefully. We
\nhad no problems with them at all.\u201d<\/div>\n

\n
\nInside, the Lebanese politician, who
\nspent 15 years in exile in Paris and now
\nheads a party called the Free Patriotic
\nMovement, spoke to a $75-a-plate dinner
\naudience to raise money and boost support among local followers in Quebec.<\/p>\n

The demonstrators, who bore
\nLebanese flags and placards denouncing
\nGeneral Aoun, accused him of supporting the governments of Iran and Syria.<\/p>\n

In 2006, General Aoun signed a memorandum of understanding with
\nHezbollah, a group which Canada and
\nthe United States have branded as a terrorist organization.<\/p>\n

Four Hezbollah members have been indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon\u2014a United Nations-authorized judicial
\nbody based in Leidschendam,
\nNetherlands\u2014for their alleged involvement in the 2005 assassination of popular Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n<\/p>\n

On Oct. 19, a car bomb in Beiruit took the life of Wissam al Hassan, the head of
\nLebanon\u2019s Internal Security Forces’ intelligence service, who had recently
\nuncovered evidence of clandestine
\nSyrian meddling in Lebanon\u2019s affairs.<\/p>\n

CTV News reported, Oct. 29, that the protesters believed that Aoun planned to
\nspend several days in the Laurentian
\nresort city Mont Tremblant, \u201cto meet
\nmembers of a local group with ties to
\nHezbollah.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
