It\u2019s growing more and more common
\nto encounter Laval residents whose
\nmother tongue is neither English nor
\nFrench, according to Statistics Canada,
\nwhich released its 2011 census data on
\nlanguage, Oct. 24.<\/p>\n

The poll showed that as immigrants
\nbegin to prosper in their new country,
\nthey too are fleeing Montreal\u2019s high
\nmunicipal taxes, provincial surtaxes and
\nred tape, just like middle-class French-speakers before them.<\/p>\n

While the proportion of native
\nEnglish-speakers, at seven per cent, has
\nbarely edged higher during the past
\ndecade, the slice of Laval residents who
\nspeak a mother tongue other than
\nFrench or English has jumped to 28.5%,
\nup from 19% in 2001.<\/p>\n

Arabic, Italian & Greek strong
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Laval\u2019s third-largest mother tongue is now Arabic, spoken by one in fifteen residents, or 6.6% of the population.
\nItalian is in fourth place, at 4.6% with
\nGreek in fifth, at 3.8% of residents, followed closely by Spanish (3.1%) and
\nCr\u00e9ole (1.9%).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nStatistics Canada also revealed that
\nLaval\u2019s English mother-tongue population is overwhelmingly bilingual (77%),
\nparticularly those aged 20-44 (87.6%)
\nand 45-64 (79.4%). In contrast, only
\njust over half (51.8%) of the city\u2019s
\nFrench-mother tongue population is
\nbilingual, with the youngest residents
\nbeing\u2014by far\u2014the least able (30.9%)
\nto express themselves in English.<\/p>\n

The census figures contained encouraging news for French-speakers who
\nfear their language is being eroded.
\nThey showed that new Canadians in
\nLaval are gradually gravitating toward
\nFrench in their daily lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2011, 12.9% of the population
\nspoke only English most often at home, 65.2% spoke only French and 14.9%
\nspoke only a non-official language,\u201d
\nStatistics Canada reported.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
\nIn terms of language spoken at home
\non a regular basis, the national poll
\nfound that 24.7% only speak their
\nmother tongue part of the time.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the demographics contrasted
\nmarkedly with the figures for Quebec as
\na whole.\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
\n\u201cIn comparison, the provincial percentages were 9.8% for only English,
\n80% for only French and 7.1% for only
\na non-official language,\u201d Statistics
\nCanada noted.<\/p>\n

The figures also showed that the proportion of residents whose mother
\ntongue is Arabic is triple the provincial
\nslice of the population.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
