Upgrades aim to put seniors\u2019 residence on solid footing<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\nConstruction workers began demolition work, Nov. 12, to transform a wing of Ch\u00e2teau Dollard<\/a> to accommodate the needs of Alzheimer\u2019s patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nToronto real estate firm Realty Financial Advisors<\/a> (RFA) is investing more than $2 million to upgrade the Dollard des Ormeaux eldercare centre, whose previous owners were declared bankrupt, Jan. 27.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cWe acquired the property from the receiver in July,\u201d RFA Group vice-president Ben Rodney told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe really liked the staff and the services that they provided, so we stepped into a difficult situation by spending money in the right areas,\u201d he explained. \u201cOur group has a lot of experience overcoming these sorts of obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAs a result, he continued, \u201cthere are a lot of positive activities going on at Ch\u00e2teau Dollard right now.\u201d<\/div>\n

\nRFA has already put a pull-cord alarm system in residents\u2019 rooms and plans to install new security cameras, fire and smoke alarms to provide additional protection. Rodney said that the new Alzheimer\u2019s wing will get its own dedicated salon and dining area. Landscaping and interiors are also getting a makeover with solid-surface flooring, new paint and lighting, and construction ought to be completed by the end of March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nCh\u00e2teau Dollard is one of two Dollard des Ormeaux seniors\u2019 residences previously owned by Liberty Assisted Living, a company that operated a string of troubled seniors residences elsewhere in Quebec and Ontario.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAs reported in The Suburban<\/i> last week, the other seniors\u2019 residence\u2014Ch\u00e2teau Royal\u2014is currently undergoing emergency renovation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAn exclusive report<\/a> by The Suburban,<\/i> Oct. 17, revealed that Quebec Superior Court issued an order authorizing repairs, after building inspectors discovered that moisture had infiltrated Ch\u00e2teau Royal\u2019s interior walls, which showed signs of extensive mould-like staining.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nRodney said that, in contrast, \u201cCh\u00e2teau Dollard was built in 1989 out of concrete. It is so solid that it can be difficult to get cellphone reception inside the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nHe added that marketing manager Teresa Poce returned to Ch\u00e2teau Dollard after she learned that the residence was under new management.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cShe has been instrumental in generating new leasing activity and reaching out to the community in Dollard des Ormeaux,\u201d he enthused.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nRodney said that eldercare firm Cogir<\/a>\u2014which court appointed receiver \u00c9ric St. Amour of PriceWaterhouse-Coopers hired to run Ch\u00e2teau Dollard after it was declared bankrupt\u2014will continue to oversee day-to-day operations on behalf of the new owner.<\/div>\n
