{"id":2261,"date":"2012-11-21T23:55:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-21T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2012\/11\/21\/doctor-shortage\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:41:59","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:41:59","slug":"doctor-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2012\/11\/21\/doctor-shortage\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctor shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>Laval second-worst region in Quebec <\/i><\/b> <\/p>\n<div>\n<b><br \/><\/b><br \/>\n<b>By Robert Frank<\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With 90 family physicians for every 100,000 residents, only the Lanaudi\u00e8re region of Quebec has a sparser supply of family doctors than Laval. <\/p>\n<p>According to a report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cihi.ca\/\">www.cihi.ca<\/a>), the island city fares a bit better in terms of specialist physicians. <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the <i>Cit\u00e9 de la sant\u00e9<\/i> superhospital, Laval has 71 specialists for every 100,000 residents\u2014though that still places Laval in the bottom half of the pack, coming in tenth place among Quebec\u2019s 18 medical regions. Three of them\u2014Montreal, Gatineau and the Eastern Townships\u2014have more than double the number of specialists as a proportion of the population. <\/p>\n<p>Worse, previous CIHI studies show that those figures have barely budged from two years earlier, when the corresponding figure for family physicians stood at 89 and specialists at 69. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever politicians ask the public what are the main issues, people tell them that they want access to health care, whether in terms of family practitioners or wait time for specialists,\u201d CIHI\u2019s Yvonne Rosehart told <i>The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to provide an indicator that shows how many doctors there are in each region,\u201d said the physician-database program leader. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaval doctors also tend to be older than the Quebec average,\u201d she noted. \u201cIs looking at ways to recruit young doctors part of the strategy for Laval?\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<br \/>\n<b>Foreign-trained doctors shunned<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The latest statistics also show that Montreal\u2019s share of family physicians is 36 per cent higher than Laval\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Montreal\u2019s share of foreign-trained family doctors, coincidentally, is 36 per cent higher than Laval\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuebec has, by a significant margin, the lowest share of foreign-trained doctors of all the provinces, at about 11 per cent,\u201d Rosehart explained. \u201cIn the rest of Canada, that share is about a quarter.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many parts of Canada, we are seeing policies aimed at guiding [foreign-trained] doctors through the process, and there are a lot of rural incentive programs that target foreign-trained physicians.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile a quarter of Quebecers have to cope without a family doctor, about 100 perfectly qualified foreign-trained doctors&nbsp;can\u2019t practice, because they don\u2019t have enough money to complete the exams,\u201d Dr. Comlan Amouzou of <i>M\u00e9dicins d\u2019ailleurs,<\/i> told <i>The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>\u201cMany of them are on welfare,\u201d added the head of the advocacy and support group for foreign-educated doctors, \u201cand have to rely on food banks to feed their families.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Last year, St. Mary\u2019s Hospital in C\u00f4te des Neiges introduced a program to help integrate them.
