Laval police will be stepping up their presence at shopping centres, as the Christmas season approaches. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe call it Op\u00e9ration Temps des F\u00eates,\u201d<\/i> Const. Nathalie Lorrain told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cMore police officers and vehicles will be patrolling malls and the areas surrounding them because of the increased flow of people.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is usually a lot of congestion on the road at this time of year, leading to more accidents,\u201d she explained, \u201cand people try to cut into lanes.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cTwo cars will be patrolling this week, but that number will increase with each passing week, particularly if we observe the need for more police presence.\u201d <\/p>\n

Peace officers will also be on the lookout for vehicles illegally parked in fire lanes or in parking spots reserved for the disabled. <\/p>\n

\u201cThefts also tend to increase at this time of year,\u201d Const. Lorrain warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cShoppers’ hands are full, so they leave merchandise in their vehicle and return to the mall.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThieves know that people often leave valuables in their car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the malls enjoying heightened police scrutiny are Carrefour Laval, Centropolis, Centre Laval and Gal\u00e9ries Laval, as well as shopping centres in Sainte Doroth\u00e9e and Duvernay.<\/p>\n

Armed robbery <\/b><\/p>\n

In other police news, Const. Lorrain said that a six-foot tall man brandished a knife after entering a d\u00e9panneur on Sainte Rose Blvd. at 2:40 a.m., Nov. 30. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe stole around $350 from the cash register,\u201d said the Laval police spokeswoman. \u201cHe placed the money in a knapsack and fled on foot along Renaissance Blvd.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe suspect wore a dark coat, blue jeans and a winter toque,\u201d she added, urging anyone who saw anything connected to the robbery to contact police. <\/p>\n

The d\u00e9panneur cashier was not wounded, but suffered afterward from shock.<\/p>\n
