{"id":2243,"date":"2012-12-12T21:41:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T21:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2012\/12\/12\/beaconsfield-densification-goes-back-to\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:41:58","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:41:58","slug":"beaconsfield-densification-goes-back-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2012\/12\/12\/beaconsfield-densification-goes-back-to\/","title":{"rendered":"Beaconsfield densification goes back to drawing board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By Robert Frank<\/b><br \/>\nwww.thesuburban.com<\/p>\n<p>Citizens have \u201cshot down\u201d a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconsfield.ca\/en\/town-hall-meetings-revision-of-the-zoning-by-law.html\" target=\"_blank\">proposal to re-zone their neighbourhoods<\/a>, according to Rhonda Massad. <\/p>\n<p>The Beaconsfield city councilor told <i>The Suburban<\/i> in an interview that residents in four zones were aggrieved by the zoning process, \u201cparticularly in one zone: Elm Plaza.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCitizens got all excited, and rightfully so,\u201d said the District 6 representative. \u201cThey felt uninformed and unready. They kept finding errors [in the zoning proposals].\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mayor [David Pollock] voted in favour of moving this process forward,\u201d she continued, \u201cbut citizens got enough signatures to put it back to zero.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen such proposals are advanced,\u201d Massad explained, \u201cthere is a period when citizens can go to city hall and sign a registry indicating that they are not in favour of the zoning change.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffectively, it is sort of a mini-referendum. It was an overwhelming task: they had to get 181 people\u2019s signatures in order to overturn the proposal. Ultimately, they had 240 [signatories].\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She said that contentious areas include the Esso service station at St. Charles and Beaurepaire; and \u201ca spot on Beaconsfield near Lakeview.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest issue is height and densification at Elm Plaza,\u201d Massad emphasized. \u201cCitizens want the [proposed] four-storey height limit decreased to three stories.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She asserted that the newfound height of mixed-use commercial buildings would overshadow adjacent residences, and said that she would prefer zoning changes that would move taller structures \u201cto the front of the lot.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no problem with densification.
