Members of the Laval police service posted a video<\/a> on YouTube in which they used their mother tongues to offer Laval citizens their best wishes for the holidays.<\/div>\n

In addition to French, uniformed and civilian police staff greeted viewers in a dozen different spoken languages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nHoliday salutations were conveyed in Arabic, Cambodian, Cr\u00e9ole, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Laotian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.<\/div>\n

\nIn addition, the video features festive well-wishes in sign language.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cWe know that, in our community, there are some 10,000 people in Laval whose means to communicate is sign language,\u201d Lt. Daniel Gu\u00e9rin told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/div>\n

<\/b>
\nPromotes better policing<\/b><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cThis is the first time that we’ve done this,\u201d enthused the head of the Laval police service’s public affairs department. \u201cWe’ve been working on it since June.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n
\nBesides reflecting a cross section of Quebec’s third-largest city’s demographics, Gu\u00e9rin asserted that the police service’s inclusiveness \u201cmakes us a better police force.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cEmploying people from such diverse backgrounds is reflected in how we respond to the public on a day-to-day basis,\u201d he explained.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cFor example, if you have a colleague working on your team whose family originated in Lebanon, every member of the team becomes better-acquainted with people from Lebanon.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cThrough their interactions with their partner, when they meet people of Lebanese origin on the street, it brings them closer to those people.\u201d<\/div>\n

\n5,000 hits in 24 hrs<\/b><\/div>\n
\n
\nGu\u00e9rin encouraged citizens to share the video with their friends.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cMore than 5,000 people viewed it in the first 24 hours after we released it on YouTube,\u201d he grinned.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cWe’re planning to increase our use of social media platforms in order to serve the people of Laval better,\u201d Gu\u00e9rin promised. \u201cWe intend to do more on our Twitter<\/a> (@policelaval) and on Facebook<\/a> (policelaval) accounts.\u201d<\/div>\n

\n\u201cThough Laval police have only just started to offer social media service, we have had a tremendous response from the people who have linked with us with through these channels,\u201d he concluded. \u201cThat has inspired us to continue these initiatives.\u201d<\/div>\n
