Laval police were called \u00c9cole Mont de LaSalle<\/i> in Laval des Rapides, Jan. 14, on concerns that one of its students was in possession of a firearm.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt ended up being a pellet gun,\u201d Const. Franco di Genova told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo young men, about 16-17 years of age, started a fight over a young woman,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAfter it ended, one of the youths showed one of his friends what seemed to be a handgun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWord got around and police were called,\u201d he said. \u201cStudents were asked to remain in class and stay out of police officers’ way, but the school was not locked down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investigators found the pellet gun outside the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice officers and detectives met the student,\u201d Const. di Genova continued. \u201cThe pellet gun was never pointed at anyone. He just showed it to his friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not illegal in Canada to own low-velocity, compressed air and carbon dioxide powered pellet guns, and there was no evidence of a threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo charges have been laid,\u201d Const. di Genova affirmed, adding that the Laval School Board<\/a> might have administrative rules that bar students from bringing pellet guns on campus.<\/p>\n

Smartphones stolen<\/b><\/p>\n

On Jan. 12, thieves broke into the Bell Mobility boutique at a shopping centre in Sainte Doroth\u00e9e located at 916 Highway 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cAround 5:30-6 a.m., passersby on their way to work saw two suspects who broke in after they forced open the back door,\u201d said Const. di Genova.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter they entered, they grabbed 40 smartphones worth about $20,000 and fled,\u201d he said. \u201cThe witnesses have given us a basic description of the suspects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAt about 1:30 a.m., Jan 11, neighbours heard what a sounded to them like a bang at 89 Giroux, near the corner of Cartier, in Laval des Rapides.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe spotted a Pontiac Vibe on fire and called 911,\u201d said Const. di Genova. \u201cPolice and firefighters were dispatched.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce firefighters extinguished the blaze, they found a jerry can and transferred the case to police investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have determined that this was indeed a criminally set fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

No description of the suspect is available.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
