{"id":2139,"date":"2013-03-27T14:28:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-27T14:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2013\/03\/27\/beaconsfield-codered-emergency-phone\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:41:54","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:41:54","slug":"beaconsfield-codered-emergency-phone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/27\/beaconsfield-codered-emergency-phone\/","title":{"rendered":"Beaconsfield CodeRed emergency phone system up and running"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Robert Frank<\/b><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beaconsfield can now warn all its citizens of a serious emergency within an hour, thanks to the automated call system it implemented, March 25. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will probably take much less than an hour to phone every publicly listed number in the city,\u201d city manager Patrice Boileau told <i>The Suburban <\/i>in an interview, \u201cbecause the system can call all 6,000 homes simultaneously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that CodeRed, the Florida company which provides the service, \u201chas something like 1 million phone lines available to make the calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The implementation of the system was approved by Beaconsfield city council last year, Boileau recalled, \u201cat a cost of about $10,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He indicated that the system can be tweaked to limit calls to only those citizens who are affected by a local emergency, as little as a single street, in the event of a water main break. It can also warn of environmental accidents, gas leaks public health emergencies or other disasters.<\/p>\n<p>West Island municipalities have bolstered their emergency notification capacity after they faced criticism in late 2011, after sequential automated telephone call systems failed to notify citizens quickly enough of a boil-water alert.<\/p>\n<p><b>Skirts privacy concerns<\/b><\/p>\n<p>By only providing publicly available information to the Florida firm,&nbsp;Beaconsfield has avoided the backlash that Lester B. Pearson School Board faced three years ago, when it engaged a United States firm to provide a callout service to its students&#8217; families.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Patriot Act, signed into law by President George W.
