Laval is getting prepared for its wildly popular annual spring-cleaning event, April 22-28. <\/p>\n

Last year, Great Spring Cleanup attracted more than 18,000 residents: One out of every 22 citizens donned work clothes to help tidy up the city\u2019s parks, waterfront and green space. <\/p>\n

According to city officials, schoolchildren are the single biggest contributors to the volunteer outdoor spruce-up. <\/p>\n

They reported that since the first Great Spring Cleanup in 1993, the yearly event has bagged more than 1,100 tonnes of rubbish, the equivalent of 110 garbage truck loads. <\/p>\n

Public works employees are also gearing up to groom public property, once the blanket of snow retreats and reveals a win- ter\u2019s worth of litter. They also plan to rid streets and sidewalks of sand, gravel and other detritus from that accumulated during winter road clearing work. In the meantime, they\u2019re dismantling the city\u2019s outdoor skating rinks and winter shelters. <\/p>\n

Citizens who want to register to participate in this year\u2019s Great Spring Cleanup can phone the city by dialing 311. They can also register by visiting the Laval municipal web site www.ville.laval.qc.ca<\/a> and clicking on the Environment link.<\/p>\n

City hall has promised to recognize each person who participates with an official certificate as well as a memento of the event. <\/p>\n
