\u201cMonnaie soit qui Mali pense,\u201d <\/i>is the new maxim at Laval Technopole. <\/p>\n

The city\u2019s business development agency will host representatives from the North African nation later this month. <\/p>\n

\u201cDelegates from Mali will be coming to Quebec in mid-February,\u201d announced Laval\u2019s newly appointed economic ambassador Paolo Galati. \u201cLaval Technopole has arranged for us to meet them on Wednesday, Feb. 25.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDiscussions will entail how to develop different agricultural sectors and how to go about bidding on future industrial development,\u201d he said in an interview. <\/p>\n

The landlocked country of 15 million people is one of the world\u2019s poorest. Mali\u2019s main exports are gold, livestock and cotton, but Laval businesses could help it to diversify.<\/p>\n

Like Quebec, the country has successfully exploited some of its hydroelectric potential. The average Malian earns about $1,500 a year, so there is nowhere to go but up. <\/p>\n

Galati\u2019s was appointed Laval\u2019s economic ambassador two weeks ago. His role is to help create international relationships for Laval. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy first step has involved a lot of reading and analysis,\u201d the St. Vincent de Paul councillor told The Suburban,<\/i> recalling the first two weeks since his appointment as the city\u2019s international trade honcho. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that Laval, which is already well respected in Quebec and in Canada, become one of the most respected cities in the world,\u201d Galati said. \u201cWe\u2019re working hard to develop opportunities internationally.\u201d<\/p>\n
