\nMayor Alexandre Duplessis met Enbridge public affairs director \u00c9ric Prud\u2019homme, April 4, to address the city\u2019s concerns about the energy distribution firm\u2019s plan to reverse the flow in its oil pipeline, which traverses the eastern tip of the island.<\/p>\n

The municipal administration wanted reassurance about the company\u2019s safety measures and emergency response plans for its Sarnia-Montreal interprovincial pipeline.<\/p>\n

Prud\u2019homme told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview that criticism by local environment groups are not supported by the facts.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuy Garand [of the Laval regional environmental council] said that Enbridge plans to increase pressure in the pipeline,\u201d he observed. \u201cThat\u2019s absolutely false. We will continue to operate at the same level of pressure that the permit issued by the National Energy Board granted us. The product doesn\u2019t need any additional pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prud\u2019homme added that Garand also misled the public with a jeremiad about a spill three weeks ago in Arkansas, which occurred after ExxonMobil reversed the flow in one of its pipelines.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada and the United States have very different regulations,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s like comparing apples and oranges.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe flow through Laval in Line 9 will be going in the direction that it was designed to carry the oil in the first place,\u201d Prud\u2019homme contrasted. Last month Graham White, a spokesman at Enbridge headquarters in Calgary, told The Suburban<\/i> that there had never been a major leak on the line in the 40 years it has operated.<\/p>\n

Prud\u2019homme slammed recent news reports claiming that the energy carrier won\u2019t offer any guarantees to municipalities, in the event of an oil spill.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnbridge takes responsibility for 100 per cent of its activities,\u201d he insisted. \u201cWe\u2019re a very responsible corporation, and if something happens, we face the music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Duplessis declined The Suburban\u2019s <\/i>request for comment on the meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnbridge presented the overall pipeline project to Mayor Duplessis,\u201d his spokesman Pierre-Philippe Lortie replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaval\u2019s mayor wants to make sure all residents have all the information that they need to make up their own mind about this important project,\u201d he continued. \u201cTo that end, he is welcoming all parties involved in this project to inform him of their concerns.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
