Laval firefighters were called to Horizon senior high school on Ste. Rose Boulevard, April 25, after ten people\u2014eight students and two teachers\u2014were overcome by natural gas fumes in the school’s kitchen and cafeteria. <\/p>\n

Urgences sant\u00e9 paramedics assessed the victims on the spot, some of whom experienced severe headaches. They transported two of them to hospital afterward for a more in-depth medical assessment. <\/p>\n

\u201cGaz M\u00e9tropolitain was called to the scene because of the smell of gas,\u201d Laval deputy fire chief Ren\u00e9 Daigneault told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. \u201cHowever school officials had already opened all the doors and windows to vent the air inside, so when the inspectors checked with their detectors, they found nothing abnormal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 1,000 students were evacuated from the school before firefighters arrive,\u201d Laval police Const. Nathalie Lorrain said in a separate interview. \u201cPolice also responded to assist firefighters, if need be, with the evacuation and crowd control.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo lives were in danger,\u201d added Sgt. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Jean.<\/p>\n

Deputy chief Daigneault said that inspectors would return to the school to conduct more assessments.<\/p>\n

Senior killed in apartment fire <\/b><\/p>\n

In a separate incident, firefighters rushed to at 3565 Rivard, April 24, after smoke billowed from the apartment building located there.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a very small fire,\u201d reported Sgt. Jean, \u201cmainly smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirefighters found a 78-year-old man unconscious in one of the apartments,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before Urgences sant\u00e9<\/i> transported him to the Cit\u00e9 de la sant\u00e9<\/i> superhospital, where he was pronounced dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sgt. Jean said that an electrical problem caused the fire, and that an autopsy will be conducted to establish the official cause of death.<\/p>\n
