Action Laval’s candidate for mayor has renewed his call for Quebec to suspend Laval’s municipal government, in the wake of the arrests. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s very disturbing,\u201d Jean-Claude Gob\u00e9 told The Suburban<\/i>. \u201cWe have asked municipal affairs minister Sylvain Gaudreault to place the city under trusteeship.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no transparency in city hall.<\/p>\n

Everything is done in the dark. People ask questions, but they don’t answer them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are still 180 days to go until the next municipal election, and I’m very worried what could happen during the intervening six months, because Mayor Duplessis calls himself the dauphin of the Vaillancourt administration. The latest developments show that either he was asleep or was he in connivance with those people? It’s a very dangerous situation, which is why we have asked to have the city placed under trusteeship.\u201d<\/p>\n

“It’s a sad day for Laval to learn of the methods that were used to obtain contracts,” Jacques Foucher, who is running as an independent candidate for mayor told The Suburban <\/i>in an interview. “[The arrests were] a disturbing but necessary evil, because the public needs to make a clean break so it can, in future, count on a better-managed civic administration.”<\/p>\n

“The public will have the chance to select people of quality, integrity and independent mind because now, for the first time in a long time, the public has the opportunity to elect people of different backgrounds and ways of thinking\u2014a true democracy, if the electorate chooses a different path than it has in the past,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s important not to end up with a gang that’s bound by party lines, or there’s a serious risk that we’ll just end up back where we started,” Foucher warned. “I’m independent, and I will remain that way to the end. To me, that’s what’s needed is to bring freedom of thought and action to city council.”<\/p>\n
