Unlike school officials, workers at Laval\u2019s youth protection centre are under instructions to search some of the young residents there from time to time, explained Centre de jeunesse de Laval<\/i> spokesman Mathieu Vachon.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one really likes to be searched but, in a place like ours, searches are part of our job,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> after a former resident, Esteban Torres, alleged to news outlets that the youth centre conducted strip searches for illegal drugs, weapons and cell phones.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s our duty,\u201d Vachon said in an interview. \u201cWe have teens here whom we care for under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. <\/i>We have to protect the kids who are in our facilities. So we have to ensure that no forbidden items enter.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cUsually the kids respect the rules,\u201d he noted, \u201cbut when we have serious reason to suspect that someone is carrying forbidden items, we\u2019re authorized under very specific and strict rules to conduct a search.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn all circumstances, searches are done in a very responsible manner and are done very seldom,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not something that we do every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vachon explained that, most of the time, this entails a partial search like a pat-down.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt\u2019s very rare that we do complete searches,\u201d he said. \u201cTo be clear, when we do complete searches it involves searching all the clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the youth centre does not perform cavity searches. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat is strictly forbidden,\u201d Vachon said. \u201cOnly police can do that.\u201d
