The Liberals who represent four of Laval’s six provincial ridings, kept their word, May 30, when they voted against a law that will take more rights away from non-French-speaking Quebecers. <\/p>\n

The head of Laval’s provincial Liberal caucus and Chomedey’s member of the National Assembly, Guy Ouellette\u2014together with Francine Charbonneau (Mille \u00celes), Gilles Ouimet (Fabre) and Jean Rousselle (Vimont)\u2014cast their ballots against Bill 14. The legislation nonetheless passed second reading, because members of the Coalition pour l’avenir du Quebec (CAQ) party joined with the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois (PQ) government in approving the bill.<\/p>\n

\nThat doesn’t mean that it’s law yet: The vote merely allowed the act to proceed to committee amendment study and then to third reading and final vote. The PQ government has announced that the committee work will start in the fall.<\/div>\n
\n
\nOuellette again deplored the PQ’s coercive tactics and divisive strategy.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cWe have always said that we would vote against a bill that undermines the linguistic balance, unjustifiably takes away rights, increases the administrative burden of small business without justification and makes any violation of [Bill 101] a matter for the courts,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The Liberal politicians also denounced the CAQ for playing along with the P\u00e9quiste agenda.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\u201cIt is distressing to see that the CAQ simply has no principles. While it purports to be opposed to the majority of the measures in Bill 14, Fran\u00e7ois Legault’s party rallied around the PQ, of which he was once a member. Why say one thing and do the opposite? Once again, the CAQ leader is acting in a purely opportunistic manner. Fran\u00e7ois Legault is acting like a man without convictions of his own,\u201d they concluded.<\/div>\n
