Verdun resident Guillaume Voyer is one step closer to his dreams of creating a new urban agriculture cooperative in Verdun.<\/p>\n

Voyer\u2019s vision of raising fish such as perch and tilapia with greens in a recirculating system in the borough\u2019s greenhouse won a $5,000 scholarship from C\u00c9COSOL, the social economy branch of Caisses Desjardins du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cGreenhouses have an enormous potential for transforming our borough into a centrepiece of urban agriculture,\u201d said Voyer. \u201cMy project is really at the embryonic stage, but interest is there.\u201d<\/p>\n

His idea is similar to what\u2019s already happening at Concordia<\/a> and in Milwaukee at Growing Power<\/a>, Sweetwater<\/a> and Central Greens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Voyer won his scholarship during the sixth edition of the \u00ab \u00c0 go, on change le monde \u00bb!<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00c0 go, on change le monde<\/i> is a collaboration between the Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM), CDEC, C\u00c9COSOL, LOJIQ and the Fondation Bombardier to encourage social economy entrepreneurship in Quebec. Some 200 projects were submitted from across the province with a total of $22,000 in cash and $3,000 in travel expenses going to nine winners.<\/p>\n

There were seven other winning Montreal projects in addition to Voyer\u2019s. They are: Le Petit march\u00e9 de l\u2019Est de Rosemont;<\/i> a students\u2019 coop called Utile<\/i> in the Latin Quarter; the Valoristes Coop; a floating market on the St. Lawrence River; a mobile game to develop humanitarianism by Decode Global; and immigrant language training for health sector workers.<\/div>\n
