About 300 maintenance workers will spend the summer digging up stretches of the Sarnia-Montreal pipeline that runs through eastern Laval, starting this week. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s part of regular, scheduled maintenance, like when you go to the dentist for a checkup,\u201d said \u00c9ric Prud\u2019homme, spokesman for Enbridge Inc., which owns the line. Prud\u2019homme told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview that the digs are not related to the company\u2019s application to reverse the flow in the pipeline to deliver oil from Western Canada to Suncor\u2019s Montreal refinery. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe do these kind of digs every year, but run special high-tech diagnostic tests every 5-7 years,\u201d he said, explaining that Enbridge will be using techniques such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), similar to what is used in hospitals and in the space program. <\/p>\n

\u201cThink of a snake that goes into the line,\u201d he illustrated. \u201cThey check the line millimeter by millimeter looking for anomalies\u2014not leaks\u2014that in 5-7 years could become challenges. They\u2019re looking for internal or external corrosion, dents and cracks and can detect a crack the size of a pinhole.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cOnce that is done, the experts crunch the data and, if needed, expose the pipe completely to check its integrity,\u201d Prud\u2019homme continued. \u201cThat permits them to use the non-intrusive MRI to check and make a visual assessment.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cUsually there\u2019s nothing to worry about,\u201d he reassured, \u201cotherwise we\u2019ll weld two steel sleeves around the pipeline or replace that segment of pipe.\u201d <\/p>\n

Prud\u2019homme stressed his company\u2019s close collaboration with residents and farmers. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have teams in the field right now talking to landowners and surveying the land,\u201d he said. \u201cWe negotiate where we go and how we enter the property. We provide compensation and conduct an environmental assessment beforehand.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIf there is nesting or an endangered species present, we\u2019ll wait before we proceed with the work,\u201d Prud\u2019homme reassured. \u201cOn agricultural land, we take the topsoil away beforehand, and the final digging is done by hand to minimize risk when we get close to the pipe.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we\u2019re done, we replace the top-soil and monitor the environment there for a full year to see that the indigenous species are back and that the ecosystem is the way it was before we started,\u201d he noted. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t do this because there\u2019s a leak,\u2019 Prud\u2019homme emphasized. \u201cWe do it to find anomalies, so that they don\u2019t become a leak, later on. We\u2019d rather do more of these digs in order to take no risk.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
