City councilor Paola Hawa has officially entered the race for mayor of Sainte Anne de Bellevue, during municipal elections, November 3.<\/p>\n

According to the Elections Quebec web site, the Director General of Elections of Quebec authorized Hawa\u2019s candidacy, June 20.<\/p>\n

The official approval means that Hawa\u2019s team can now officially raise money for her election campaign.<\/p>\n

At the moment, she is the only candidate in the running. Incumbent Mayor Francis Deroo has not yet indicated whether or not he will bid for reelection, however several unconfirmed sources said that he told municipal employees, June 26, that he did not plan to run again.<\/p>\n

Sainte Anne de Bellevue has been riven by controversy, of late, over the closure of two overpasses alongside westbound highway 40.<\/p>\n

In May, former mayor Bill Tierney castigated the civic administration for needlessly closing the spans two years ago, partially cutting off automobile access to the town.<\/p>\n

In a telephone interview, Hawa, who ran unsuccessfully for the Coalition pour l\u2019avenir du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> party during last year\u2019s provincial election, told The Suburban<\/i> that the overpass debacle is just one of the reasons tha t she decided to run locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more than just the overpasses,\u201d she declared. \u201cIt\u2019s the way every issue is handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat played a huge role in spurring me to run,\u201d Hawa added, \u201cbecause I believe in transparency\u2014not just words but actions and responsible governance. That is something that is sorely missed in Sainte Anne de Bellevue. We need vision and respect for the citizens.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
