In the wake of Lac M\u00e9gantic, LaSalle resident Joseph Pugliese\u2019s question about local security plans in the wake of a train disaster at the April borough council meeting seem prescient. At the time, Mayor Manon Barbe mentioned that the borough has an industrial committee to ensure that communications in the wake of a major accident work well.<\/p>\n

\u201cCity emergency services will take the lead and the borough will take care of the people,\u201d said Pierre Dupuis, LaSalle\u2019s clerk and director of communications. \u201cWe take care of communicating with them, and evacuating them if need be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Representatives from all levels of government and major companies volunteer their time on the committee, which meets several times a year.<\/p>\n

\nIndustrial committee members <\/b><\/p>\n

Members of the board are: co-presidents R\u00e9mi Saulnier from Fleischmann Yeast; Myriam Fernet from the Service de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 incendie de Montr\u00e9al;<\/i> LaSalle city councillor Alvaro Farinacci; D\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique LaSalle<\/i> director Jacques Fortin; Jos\u00e9e Sweeney from Arborite Canada; and Nicolas Gaudreault from Labatt Breweries. <\/p>\n

Members include: Marc Reiss from Weir Canada; Nicolae Florea from Total Canada; R\u00e9al Adams from Produits chimiques Delmar;<\/i> R\u00e9gent B\u00e9dard from Produits de construction BP Canada<\/i>; <\/i>and LaSalle borough human resources officer Jos\u00e9e Boulanger. <\/p>\n

Consultative members include: Bruno Lachance from the Service de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 incendie de Montr\u00e9al; Marie-Jos\u00e9e Garant from the Centre de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 civile;<\/i> LaSalle police chief Pierre Liboiron; Salah Berro from Environment Canada; and Joanie Gaudreault from D\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique LaSalle.<\/i><\/p>\n

Public information<\/b>
Most of the public information about LaSalle\u2019s industrial committee appears on the borough\u2019s economic development site<\/a>. That\u2019s because the emergency preparedness plan began in 1997 as a way to deal with possible industrial disasters, particularly those that would expose populations to toxic gases.<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nSince then, the plan has expanded to include other emergency situations.<\/p>\n

Planning for train-related emergencies<\/b>
Dupuis says that LaSalle\u2019s plan includes the possibility of evacuating Borough Hall, which isn\u2019t far from the train tracks. In that case, emergency services would be established on Cordner Street at the east end of the borough.<\/p>\n

Since the train disaster, LaSalle Mayor Barbe has written to Lac M\u00e9gantic Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche to offer condolences and support.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also written to C\u00f4te Saint Luc Mayor Anthony Housefather to confirm that she gives him her entire support in his efforts to get the federal government to disclose the materials being transported on trains to the communities they pass through.<\/p>\n

There has also been correspondence between Barbe and Mayor Guy Pilon of Vaudreauil-Dorion. Barbe fully supports Pilon\u2019s efforts to get the federal government to lower the speeds of CP and the CN trains when they pass through local communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cMayor Barbe wrote to him to give him her full support on that issue,\u201d said Dupuis. \u201cWe would like trains to lower their speeds in LaSalle and all the urban areas.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
