Morris Trudeau wants to use his nearly 50-year association with Pointe Claire to bring continuity to the mayor’s office. The District 8 councillor is the first elected member of city council to toss his hat in the ring in the wake of Mayor Bill McMurchie’s announcement that he will not seek re-election in November.<\/p>\n

Trudeau joined the Pointe Claire police force in February 1964 and moved to the city four years later, when he married his wife Marthe.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a girl from Pointe Claire Village, who has lived here all of her life,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowledge of the city is important,\u201d Trudeau said. \u201cI know the community pretty well inside-out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trudeau continued his police work in Pointe Claire even after the force was merged with the Montreal Urban Community Police in 1972. Only during the final years before his retirement in April 1998 did he commute downtown to work at the courthouse.<\/p>\n

Six months later, he ran successfully for city councillor and\u2014together with Mayor McMurchie and District 4 councillor Aldo Iermieri\u2014helped see Pointe Claire through the ensuing five-year forced merger with Montreal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m sure that there will be three or four good people running for mayor,\u201d Trudeau anticipated.<\/p>\n

He believes that his 15 years on city council will set him apart.<\/p>\n

\n
\u201cI have a little bit of experience and can work well with any council and city employees,\u201d he underscored. \u201cIt’s very important to know how the city is run and how to treat your employees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trudeau is one of the last vanguards of the generation that oversaw Pointe Claire’s postwar development. The returning veterans who transformed the city adhered to their vision of a family-oriented community and built a network of pools, schools, libraries and soccer pitches that were second to none.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not change that,\u201d Trudeau declared. \u201cI raised three children in Pointe Claire, and the city’s facilities and services are phenomenal. We are really quite fortunate here, and I hope to continue the trend.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
