Richard Langlais, from Vision Montreal and Andr\u00e9e Champoux, an independent councillor who used to be in Union Montr\u00e9al, have both applied for authorization from the Directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral des \u00e9lections du Qu\u00e9bec to set up new parties: Vision Verdun\u2013\u00c9quipe Richard Langlais<\/i> and \u00c9quipe Andr\u00e9e Champoux pour Verdun<\/i> respectively.<\/p>\n

Neither has yet been approved, and local Vision executive members still hope to prevent a major split in their membership. <\/p>\n

\u201cDiscussions about how we might form an electoral team for the next municipal election are still underway between Vision Montr\u00e9al and the coalition led by Marcel C\u00f4t\u00e9 and represented by Alain Tass\u00e9 in Verdun,\u201d wrote Vision’s Verdun president Andr\u00e9 Julien in an e-mail. \u201cThe result of these discussions should be known in the coming hours. To date, no one from Vision Montreal in the borough of Verdun has quit to support Richard Langlais.\u201d <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Mary Ann Davis, Projet Montr\u00e9al’s mayoralty candidate in Verdun began her campaign defending attacks against her English heritage. Criticism against her began after she made an innocuous comment at the mike on Canada Day. <\/p>\n

Her comment, \u201cyou are all so beautiful and how fortunate are we to have such diversity\u201d led to an unexpected firestorm that the perfectly bilingual union organizer hasn’t had to face before. <\/p>\n

\u201cI knew that some people would have a problem with me being gay,\u201d said Davis in an interview. \u201cOthers wouldn’t like that I’m a woman. I never imagined being an anglophone would be the same kind of issue.\u201d <\/p>\n

Some citizens might give her a hard time for her name, but Projet Montreal’s candidate isn’t likely to face criticism from other parties. Alain Tass\u00e9, who is running with the C\u00f4t\u00e9 Coalition, is married to an anglophone. Both Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Parenteau, from \u00c9quipe Denis Coderre and Richard Langlais from Vision Verdun\u2013\u00c9quipe Richard Langlais, are bilingual businessmen with many English-speaking clients. <\/p>\n

In fact, many of the candidates known to be running in Verdun are perfectly bilingual. Several come from the anglophone community, including Pierre L’Heureaux, who teaches history at Dawson College and graffiti artist Sterling Downey. <\/p>\n

Each party has the right to run seven candidates in Verdun, one person for mayor, two people for city councillors and four people for borough councillors. <\/p>\n
