\u201cLaval can\u2019t afford to be complacent,\u201d warned Jean Rousselle.<\/p>\n

The island city\u2019s thriving economy, which defied economic gravity during the last recession, is now at risk, he said in the wake of \u201ca deteriorating Quebec economy and government finances since the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> was elected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big cities weren\u2019t hit as hard as the rest of Quebec, which has lost 40,400 jobs since the beginning of the year,\u201d Vimont riding\u2019s representative in Quebec City told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. \u201cPrivate industry here has been driving the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Laval, we even saw an improvement of 2.2 percent, and Montreal and Quebec were also ahead marginally at 0.2 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively,\u201d he acknowledged.<\/p>\n

Can\u2019t last<\/b>

<\/b>
\nRousselle said that he is concerned that Laval can\u2019t remain an economic outlier indefinitely, while the rest of the province faces an economic tsunami.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wave is coming,\u201d he cautioned. \u201cThere will be a lag before we feel it but, when it hits, it will be quite something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, many Laval companies had been poised to profit from the Plan nord,\u201d <\/i>Rousselle observed.<\/p>\n

Together with the rest of the Laval Liberal caucus\u2014Francine Charbonneau (Mille \u00celes), Guy Ouellette (Chomedey) and Gilles Ouimet (Fabre)\u2014he called for the Marois government to take concrete steps without delay.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re asking the government to assume its responsibilities and to present an Employment Action Plan to Quebecers in the near term,\u201d they said in a statement, Aug. 22.<\/p>\n

In contrast, they observed that \u201cin the rest of Canada, 82,400 jobs were created since the start of 2013.\u201d<\/p>\n

One billion in the hole<\/b>

<\/b>
\n\u201c[Industry Minister] H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Zaka\u00efb said that the Quebec economy is doing well but the latest statistics are troubling,\u201d Rouselle fretted.<\/p>\n

\nA Quebec government report at the end of June posted an $800 million shortfall in revenue for last year, on top of a previously announced $250 million deficiency. <\/p>\n

Liberal finance critic Raymond Bachand joined the Laval Liberal caucus in warning of \u201ca ripple effect\u201d this year.<\/p>\n

In urging the Marois government to come up with \u201ca credible plan to restore fiscal balance\u201d, he admonished the P\u00e9quistes not to \u201ccontrol spending by clamping down on taxpayers and the disadvantaged.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLaval residents are asking me \u2018What will happen to us?\u2019\u201d recounted Rousselle. \u201cThey\u2019re worried.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
