A bad road rage incident has put a Laval traffic policeman on extended sick leave, while he recovers from severe injuries. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe officer intercepted a car on Cl\u00e9roux for a routine highway code violation around 11:30 a.m., Aug. 19,\u201d Const. Nathalie Lorrain told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cHe retrieved the driver\u2019s papers and was writing the ticket when the driver \u2013 who was alone in his vehicle \u2013 got out of his car and started banging on the window of the patrol car with his fists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cThe officer got out to tried to control the situation,\u201d she continued. \u201cAs he opened the door, the man punched him repeatedly in the face. As the policeman tried to push the man away and get out of the patrol car, he was thrown to the ground, injuring his knee badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA woman who witnessed the incident through her window called 911 to report that a police officer was being attacked, was on the ground and that his assailant was kicking him,\u201d Const. Lorrain said. \u201cThe police officer managed to wrestle him to the ground as well, and applied pepper spray. That\u2019s when he regained control of the situation and handcuffed  the assailant.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn the meantime, all the police cars in the city heard the incident on their radios, since the patrol officer\u2019s walkie-talkie was transmitting during the alleged assault.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, one of the squad cars on its way to assist collided with another car at the intersection of Labelle and Highway 15,\u201d Const. Lorrain reported. \u201cBoth police officers and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to hospital, and Labelle was closed until 7 p.m., so traffic in the area was a mess for several hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the pair suffered minor wounds in the accident,\u201d she said, \u201cand the other probably suffered a concussion in addition to knee and arm injuries from the impact. The driver of the other was also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man who attacked the police officer was charged with assaulting a police officer, but he was taken to hospital for psychiatric evaluation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found out afterward that he is known to police officers here in Laval for having hit a police officer who was trying to arrest him in a bar for disturbing the peace,\u201d added Const. Lorrain. \u201cThe officer whom he was injured Aug. 19 has a severely sprained knee and will be off work for quite a while.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
