Gob\u00e9 calls for English CEGEP in Laval <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Lacking local postsecondary institutions, too many young Laval residents are being forced over the bridge to get their education, Action Laval mayoral candidate Jean-Claude Gob\u00e9 told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur population is quite young compared to Montreal and other areas of Quebec, and we only have one post secondary institution [Montmorency College],\u201d Gob\u00e9 observed.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaval youth have to take the subway, bus and car, and it costs them a lot more to go Montreal\u2013about $600 a year just for transport.,\u201d he said, calling for the addition of an English and another French CEGEP to Quebec\u2019s third-largest city. \u201cIt\u2019s just not right that in a city with a population of 408,000, these young people can\u2019t study in their own community.\u201d<\/p>\n

In contrast, Champlain College has for more than four decades operated a campus to serve the much smaller non-francophone population of Quebec City, and G\u00e9rald Godin College serves a similar small French-speaking population on Montreal\u2019s West Island.<\/p>\n

Gob\u00e9 also wants to attract universities like McGill, Concordia, Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec and Laval University to set up campuses in Laval.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur University of Montreal campus is one of the finer accomplishments of the Vaillancourt administration,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cNow we have to build on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Higher education facilities like the ones in Boston and Munich foster centres of excellence, Gob\u00e9 underscored, in a similar manner to the health sciences cluster that Laval has already developed at its biotech city, which attracted more than $1 billion in investment to the city last year.<\/p>\n

Gob\u00e9 is also vaunting a new riverbus service to Montreal, akin to Vancouver\u2019s seabus, to break Laval\u2019s commuter logjam.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to implement a pilot project with STL or the private sector to reduce congestion,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe vessels would carry pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, but not automobiles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Action Laval is also intrigued by Montreal\u2019s BIXI bicycle-for-hire service, though Gob\u00e9 was more circumspect about extending the project to Laval.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to goo too quickly with that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n
Single bus pass<\/b><\/p>\n

He does want to weld Montreal and Laval transit fares into one, though.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need a single bus pass to serve Montreal and Laval,\u201d Gob\u00e9 asserted. \u201cRight now, the people of Laval have no choice because of all the services that they have to go to Montreal for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have to pay twice to take public transit to go to college, university or hospital,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s unfair to have to pay $600-$700 more per year than other citizens, just because we live in Laval. For a city of more than 400,000, that\u2019s simply unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robocop cameras<\/b><\/p>\n

Action Laval also wants to harness technology to reduced lawbreaking.<\/p>\n

Gob\u00e9 advocated implementing photo radar that is currently being tested in Laval. \u201cI support placing the cameras on residential streets where people are driving too fast and don\u2019t respect traffic signals,\u201d he declared. \u201cThey are endangering children and senior citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
He is also considering adding surveillance cameras in some public areas where vandalism and youth crime is rife.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot everywhere,\u201d he reassured. \u201cI don\u2019t want to introduce too much police and control in Laval.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
Whither Fabreville?<\/b><\/p>\n

Gob\u00e9 declined to say specify when Action Laval plans to announce the remainder of its slate of district candidates for city council.<\/p>\n

One conspicuous vacancy is in Fabreville, where Action Laval has yet to disclose its candidate, and where incumbent Martine Beaugrand has announced her intention to run again as city councilor, once she completes her term as interim mayor, Nov. 3.<\/p>\n

Beaugrand was one of only two sitting members of city council untouched by accusations of illegal election financing.<\/p>\n

She has not yet stated which party she might align herself with during the coming election, and Gob\u00e9 declined to comment as to whether the interim mayor might join the Action Laval ticket.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\nAccording to Action Laval candidate Jean-Claude Gob\u00e9, Quebec’s third-largest city needs its own higher education facilities to become a centre of excellence in its own right.<\/b><\/div>\n
