Recently, Station 1 Commander Richard Thouin, along with Community Relations Officer J.P. Levis, held an information meeting for Sainte Anne de Bellevue residents outlining the precinct’s partnership with public security who were also in attendance.<\/p>\n

Thouin spoke about the need for collaboration between public security and police officers and cited recent radar operations held within its territory that included both police and municipal patrollers.<\/p>\n

Levis spoke about “demystifying police work as many people get their information from US based programs and in Canada, we have federal, provincial and municipal rules to adhere to.”<\/p>\n

While police officers can enforce all three levels of justice, municipal patrols and public security officials are restricted to municipal by-law enforcement but Levis noted that “public security can help be our eyes and ears since we have a large territory to cover and cannot be everywhere at once.”<\/p>\n

Levis explained that any call placed to 911 would “receive action within six seconds as the dispatcher can call the appropriate help while still getting information from the caller in order to submit additional information to patrollers.”<\/p>\n

Calls are divided into six categories and priority is given to the first where a life is in immediate danger. Levis mentioned that due to Station 1’s 500 sq. km. territory, “sometimes a person who has made a call from Kirkland will have to wait a little bit if officers are coming from a call in Sainte Anne-de-Bellevue.”<\/p>\n

Besides providing patrol cars and uniformed officers, the station also has a traffic specialist and officers who deal in youth crime as well as undercover agents working on specific dossiers.<\/p>\n

Despite the presence of public security in various municipalities such as Dollard des Ormeaux, Pointe Claire and Beaconsfield, Thouin said that “our citizens are our eyes and ears and sometimes you might see something and not think it is worth calling 911 but don’t worry, we are here for you.”<\/p>\n
