\u201cStudents came up with the idea,\u201d smiled North Star Academy principal Jos\u00e9e P\u00e9pin. \u201cThey said \u2018Let\u2019s make a difference in someone\u2019s life.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

At their bidding, the Chomedey private high school has decided to fund a $10,000 tuition scholarship, either for a student who is keenly interested in the topic, or for someone who has lived through bullying.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want a candidate for whom this is close to their heart,\u201d P\u00e9pin explained. \u201cPerhaps they would like to study a discipline such as psychology later on and work in that field in order to make a difference, or they are instead someone who themselves has been unfairly treated an needs a safe environment like NSA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality out there is that bulling is happening,\u201d underscored NSA guidance counselor Susie Nemes. \u201cIt goes on in every school, though it takes different forms.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s different for boys than girls,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s not an argument. It\u2019s repetitive behaviour that is calculated either to inflict emotional or physical pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLast week, NSA held its annual anti-bullying week to help students understand the effect and impact of bullying, and how they can make a difference in their peers\u2019 lives,\u201d Nemes said. \u201cBesides wearing pink-themed anti-bullying t-shirts, NSA students participated in a contest to get as many students as possible to sign a pledge that they would never bully anyone. At the end of the week, the three students who collected the most signatures won a prize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social worker Rosie Dandrea from the Agoo children\u2019s private health centre also led a workshop for students on the topic.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it can get totally out of hand, and someone can get seriously hurt physically or emotionally,\u201d Nemes advised.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf parents suspect that their child is being bullied, it\u2019s important to reach out for help, rather that pass it off,\u201d she added. \u201cMake sure your child knows that you\u2019re listening to what they\u2019re going through and that you\u2019re going to try to make it better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the source of the problem is at the school, contact the guidance counselor,\u201d Nemes said. \u201cWe will look into it discreetly.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n
