The head of the Quebec Liberal Party\u2019s Laval caucus believes that the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> government is spoiling for a Dec. 9 election. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Liberals and Coalition pour l\u2019avenir du Qu\u00e9bec party didn\u2019t ask [PQ minister Bernard] Drainville any questions about the values charter during the past three weeks, because that would only fuel his demagogy,\u201d Guy Ouellette told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want everyone to be talking about the charter,\u201d explained the Chomedey riding MNA. \u201cIt will be one of their electoral planks. They need a smokescreen with which to divide the electorate, because the economy is faring so badly.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cQuebec has lost 50,000 jobs and the government is facing a $2 billion revenue shortfall,\u201d Ouellette continued. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have a job, the values charter is pretty low on your priority list.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we moved to ask the auditor general for [an account of the state of] public finances before the election,\u201d he said, then recited a list of recent financial lapses. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe government said it would pay a third of Ubisoft wages if they invest $500 million in Quebec. Quebec lost $205 million in revenue during the construction strike\u2014half of that while Marois was away for a week in Mexico. The decrease in new building permits means that 10 million or more houses won\u2019t be built, costing the government another $500 million.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWithout that revenue, the money will instead have to come from our pockets,\u201d he warned. \u201cAll the finance minister would say is that it\u2019s too early to say for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJobs and the economy ought to take precedence,\u201d Ouellette added, \u201cover removing the cross from the National Assembly.\u201d <\/p>\n

Needless xenophobia <\/b><\/p>\n

Ouellette echoed Laval Liberal caucus colleague Gilles Ouimet\u2019s remarks to The Suburban<\/i> two weeks ago, that the Parti <\/i>qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> is instead squandering its energy on solving problems that don\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaval is a perfect example of people who live together without discrimination enjoying the same rights and the same quality of life,\u201d he observed. \u201cSo why try to divide us?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201c[Premier Pauline] Marois\u2019 strategy is to try to get the francophone constituents of rural ridings to vote her back into office,\u201d Ouellette said, outlining how Quebec\u2019s skewed electoral map disproportionately empowers rural voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy riding is the third-most populous in the province with 57,000 voters, but many a rural riding represents fewer than 30,000 voters,\u201d he noted. \u201cAt the end of an election, though, they both elect one MNA.\u201d <\/p>\n
