Fed up with persistent mudslinging, four independent candidates joined forces at a press conference in Ste. Doroth\u00e9e, Oct. 17, to convey what they would do for Laval families and senior citizens, issues that they think should instead be at the heart of the Nov. 3 municipal election campaign. <\/p>\n

\u201cLaval\u2019s current family policy dates back to 2007 and dwells upon access to property. We sorely need to update that policy in order to offer services to the new families we are welcoming to Laval,\u201d says Fran\u00e7ois-Hugues Liberge (Laval les \u00celes). \u201cWe need to set up a families round table, and refurbish our sports infrastructure and parks.\u201d <\/p>\n

Michel Trottier (Fabreville) wants to promote collaboration between different groups. \u201cWe don\u2019t need to reinvent the wheel,\u201d he said. \u201cLots of existing Laval initiatives are great! What just needs to ensure that groups collaborate, to avoid duplicating services.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nTrottier also proposes to create a healthy lifestyle fund, to be funded by corporate citizens, that would be used to foster a welcoming environment that would encourage citizens to participate in physical activities.<\/div>\n

\nLinking healthy lifestyle to healthy environment, Louis-Martin Beaumont, (Ste. Doroth\u00e9e), wants to respond to residents\u2019 concerns over access to and protection of Ste. Doroth\u00e9e woodland.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\u201cBois\u00e9 Ste. Doroth\u00e9e is an important asset to Laval. We have to see to its preservation and long-term development,\u201d said Beaumont.<\/p>\n

\u201cSenior citizens should be the focal point of the political debate,\u201d added Sonia Baudelot (Abord \u00e0 Plouffe). \u201cAlone among Quebec\u2019s ten largest cities, Laval is the only one without a senior policy. We have to give seniors the means to remain in Laval.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lack of services for senior citizens has been voiced repeatedly throughout the election campaign, be it the difficulty of getting transportation to a supermarket, and access to palliative care or places for physically activity. The financial hardship that they face is also widely acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could have a tax policy for seniors which would permit them defer their property tax after they turn 65,\u201d said Baudelot. \u201cOnly once they sell their house would city collect the unpaid taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laval lacks English services<\/b><\/p>\n

When asked about the dearth of services for Laval\u2019s English community, all four candidates agreed that it was a priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to work with the different groups,\u201d said Baudelot, \u201cto be available for them, to meet with them and to encourage the different communities to mingle more.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHolding neighborhood councils will also facilitate communication with community groups that would not normally attend city council meetings,\u201d added Liberge. \u201cNeighborhood council are friendlier, less officious, and would be a good way to gather community input and report their concerns and needs to city hall officials.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
