You couldn\u2019t make this stuff up. If it were fiction, no one would suspend their disbelief at the oddball twists that Laval\u2019s municipal election campaign has already witnessed.<\/p>\n
Now, with ten days left to go in the city\u2019s election race, fringe mayoral candidate R\u00e9gent Millette has announced that he plans to pull a page from the New Democratic Party\u2019s campaign book during the last federal election: He\u2019s leaving on vacation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be doing the same thing as some NDP candidates did\u2014candidates who won while on vacation down south,\u201d wrote Millette in announcing his departure, Oct. 20.<\/p>\n
The fringe candidate has tried unsuccessfully to get elected in more than two dozen federal, provincial and municipal campaigns.<\/p>\n
On a Mission from God<\/b>

\nMost of his bids have been as an independent, though in the 2003 provincial election he ran for the socially conservative Christian Democracy Party (CDP) of Quebec, which opposes same-sex marriage and abortion.<\/p>\n
During his absence on holiday, Millette has designated another former fringe mayoral candidate, Rick Blatter, who decided to sit out the current election campaign, as \u201chis left-hand man and spokesperson.\u201d<\/p>\n
Like the Blues Brothers, he added, \u201cR\u00e9gent Millette\u2019s right-hand man is God.\u201d<\/p>\n
Millette has stated that he if he is elected, he will donate his salary to his family\u2019s \u201cfoundation\u201d, though there is no record of the organization having been recognized as an official charity.<\/p>\n
According to Quebec government documents, Millette formerly operated a firm that provided \u201ccasting\u201d and \u201cparalegal\u201d services.<\/p>\n
Millette, who said that he will return Nov. 9, six days after the Laval election, never replied to any of The Suburban\u2019s<\/i> interview requests.<\/div>\n
