\nAHL team to become l\u2019Avenir de Laval?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Laval could see professional hockey played here starting as soon as the 2017 season, according to executive committee vice-chairman David de Cotis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that the stars are aligned for Laval for the start of 2017-2018 hockey season,\u201d he told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

The Canadiens hockey team announced last week that it has purchased the Hamilton Bulldogs American Hockey League team and have signed a two-year lease for them to play in St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland and Labrador. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are hoping that the inauguration of the Place Bell arena here in late-summer 2017 will coincide with an announcement that the team will be moving here,\u201d de Cotis said in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings could always change,\u201d he acknowledged, \u201cbut at the moment, things look good for Laval.\u201d <\/p>\n

Such a move would be consistent with the current trend for National Hockey League teams to locate their affiliates close by.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe Future is in Laval<\/b><\/p>\n

De Cotis added that Canadiens owner Geoffrey Molson has said that he is open to input from Laval as to what a hockey team here would be named.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be interesting to name the team l\u2019Avenir de Laval,\u201d<\/i> he suggested, \u201cshould it come to Laval.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Cotis supports the forward-looking l\u2019Avenir de Laval name both as a nod to the slogan coined four decades ago by Laval\u2019s former mayor Dr. Lucien Paiement and as acknowledgement that Paiement\u2019s prophecy that \u201cthe future is in Laval\u201d continues to ring true.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
