Going door to door and meeting citizens during an election is not new for Dorval Mayor Edgar Rouleau. And while he is facing newcomer Marc Barrette, this marks Rouleau’s ninth election since beginning his municipal political career as a councillor in 1982. He is seeking a third mandate as mayor and has been acclaimed five times in his career. <\/p>\n

During his recent door to door visits, Rouleau told The Suburban<\/i> that “people are generally happy with our regular services but some have expressed concerns about speeding and drivers not respecting stop signs in residential areas.” <\/p>\n

Another common complaint from residents is “night flights\u201d for citizens living in that zone, it is one of the biggest disruptors for them,” said Rouleau. “But people know we are on the file and are trying to reduce the number of night flights.” <\/p>\n

One of the city’s biggest projects will be the creation of the new sports complex that should be ready for users in 2015. Rouleau also wants to renovate some of the city’s buildings, like the Sarto Desnoyers Community Centre. “Some of our buildings are 70-80 years old and need to be renovated,” said Rouleau. <\/p>\n

Barrette would like to “give an opportunity to new businesses to settle in Dorval by offering them a tax break, benefits and support from the community.” <\/p>\n

The political newcomer would also like to create a “concrete system that is best for our seniors to provide them with the care they need.” To help out the city’s younger aged residents who might have some difficulty in the regular school system, “I will work very hard on getting our Dorval youths that are not in school back to school possibly a trade school that I would like to open in Dorval,” said Barrette. <\/p>\n

No matter what the outcome, Rouleau is hoping that citizens will exercise their democratic rights by taking the time to vote on Sunday, Nov. 3. “Our turnout last time was 35 percent and this time we’re hoping to see about a 60-70 percent participation rate,” said Rouleau. <\/p>\n
