Senneville sees upset<\/b><\/i>

Having been acclaimed in the last two elections, incumbent Baie d’Urfe Mayor Maria Tutino enjoyed having a chance to knock on all 1,300-odd doors in the town to get a list of concerns and suggestions from citizens as well as gauging their opinions on the recent administration.<\/p>\n

With a victory of 75 per cent of the votes over Jacques Lorrain, Tutino has been given a clear mandate by the residents although results from the election only started trickling in at 12:30 a.m. Monday. The turnout was 56 per cent or 1,524 out of 2,765 eligible voters. <\/p>\n

“I’m glad the campaign is over and humbled by the peoples’ trust once again,” Tutino told The Suburban. <\/i>“We have had eight strong financial years and are dealing with a surplus.”<\/p>\n

\nTutino is looking forward to working with her new council team, a mix of incumbents such as Lynda Phelps, Pater Fletcher and acclaimed Councillors Chuck Colomb and Janet Ryan. Newcomers include district four’s Michel Beauchamp who defeated Wayne Belvedere who previously held the position. Brian Manning claimed victory over his three opponents in District 3.<\/p>\n

While visiting with citizens during the campaign, Tutino had compiled a list of issues and plans to publish the top-20 that she received, asking the citizens “to prioritize the list so we as a council can know where to put our energies.”<\/p>\n

During the campaign, Tutino found there was a lot of misinformation given to citizens about the future of the town hall and the expected renovations. And while Tutino and council held public consultations on the expansion and renovation project a year ago, “sometimes messages get mixed up so we will work on being even more transparent. We will continue to use the News and Views<\/i> and electronic billboard to get across information as well.” <\/p>\n

Some citizens who Tutino encountered expressed “their apologies for not attending council meetings and plan to start coming more often to find out what is happening at the local level.”<\/p>\n

In Senneville, longtime mayor Geroge McLeish narrowly lost to Jane Guest who garnered 282 votes to McLeish’s 257. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
