Voters keep up tradition <\/b><\/i>

The city of Pointe Claire kept up tradition as municipal political veteran, Morris Trudeau, was elected mayor, defeating municipal newcomer John Belvedere. It was a tight race as Trudeau received 53.36 percent of the vote, while Belvedere established 46.64 per cent.<\/p>\n

Trudeau has held the chair of city councilor, Oneida District 8, for the past 15 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be meeting with outgoing mayor, Bill McMurchie, to discuss the village plan, the new arena, and the revitalization of the soccer chalets\u201d Trudeau told The Suburban<\/i> following his victory late Sunday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will also be meeting with our new councillors, and local mayors in addressing the water control with newly appointed Montreal mayor, Denis Corderre.\u201d said Trudeau.<\/p>\n

\u201cMorris is a good man with plenty of community ties. He is big with the Old Timers hockey in our area.\u201d said longtime resident, John Harmidy living in District 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like Trudeau because he sat on council for 15 years, whereas Belvedere has no council experience, but mostly because Trudeau knocked on my door and spoke to me, and was at another event talking to citizens, and I think that’s important\u201d said Pointe Claire\u2019s Sharon Beaumont who resides in District 7. <\/p>\n

The John Belvedere camp was relying on change as the 100 volunteers gathered at the Pointe Claire Curling Club awaiting results Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’d say Pointe Claire needs a new fresh face and Belvedere is just that. He’s going to bring a modern twist and outlook to our city.\u201d Declared first time voter, Tamra Canty Currie.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn is the kind of guy who is the first one to help, and not afraid to roll up his sleeves to get things done.\u201d added campaign volunteer, Sharon Hyland.<\/p>\n

Said Belvedere, “the public made its choice and I respect that. I will continue to work in the community and continue volunteering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morris Trudeau will be sworn into office Monday, Nov. 11. <\/p>\n
