Laval’s heath care authority is urging residents to get inoculated with the latest influenza vaccine as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

Last year Laval was hit hard\u2014and unusually early\u2014by the flu during the holiday period, overloading the Cit\u00e9 de la sant\u00e9 superhospital after some 30 people whose lives were in danger had to be admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re reminding residents of the risks and urging them to go and get vaccinated,\u201d Laval heath care authority spokeswoman St\u00e9phanie Daignault told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlu spreads easily and getting a vaccine is the best way to prevent transmission and protect yourself against influenza and its complications,\u201d Daignault reminded. \u201cIt lets your body make its own antibodies to fight the flu.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you got a flu shot last year, everyone should go again,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have to get vaccinated each year, because the influenza virus constantly changes and last year’s immunization might not work. Health care scientists track the mutations and update the composition of the flu vaccine accordingly each year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends that everyone over six-months-old do so annually. <\/p>\n

Laval’s health care authority has arranged to provide free flu shots for those at greatest risk:<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 Children six to 23 months and their families<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 The chronically ill <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 Anyone with cardiopulmonary or renal illnesses, cancer, diabetes, asthma or a suppressed immune system <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 Anyone aged 60 and over <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 People who interact closely with at-risk individuals <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 People who interact closely with babies aged less than six months <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 Healthy women pregnant 13 weeks or more <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n\u2022 Health care workers<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nLaval residents can make an appointment for a free flu shot by visiting the website www.myshot.ca<\/a>. They can also contact the province’s health care information line by dialing 811. <\/p>\n

The inoculations will be done at the Marigot, Mille \u00celes and Ste. Rose CLSCs, as well as first line medical services centre on Dagenais West. Those over 65 and the chronically ill will also be offered a free Pneumovax<\/a> shot to prevent against dangerous respiratory infection. <\/div>\n
