The governing board of St. R\u00e9mi Elementary School in Beaconsfield, gave its approval to start the process to becoming an institution offering the IB Primary Years Program (International Baccalaureate). <\/p>\n

According to the director of the school, Brigitte Cool, the Commission Scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys (CSMB) wishes to reinvent itself and has, over the last few years, revamped its field and greatly enhanced its range of extracurricular activities. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very motivating when you see where we are headed and we want to make our children aware of the world around them,\u201d Cool explained in an interview, \u201cwe want to teach the children to be curious and altruistic.\u201d <\/p>\n

The director explained that it would take three school years to integrate the program into the current curriculum. A committee has been formed within the teaching staff to assist in the transition of integrating 42 new themes to the curriculum over the next three years. <\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike high school IB programs, we do not choose the children, all children that live in the zone are welcomed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IB Primary Years Program offers a solid education that encourages children to think critically. It encourages them to observe their immediate environment, but also to bring their attention to the world as a whole. The program promotes autonomy and critical thinking in students. <\/p>\n

The training students receive at the primary level can ensure continuity offered by high schools offering the higher level program. <\/p>\n

There are more than 3,900 institutions offering the international program around the world. Under the CSMB umbrella five secondary schools offer the program including Polyvalente des Sources in Dollard des Ormeaux, John XXIII in Dorval and those offering enriched programs such as F\u00e9lix Leclerc High School in Pointe Claire, which serves customers from St. R\u00e9mi.<\/p>\n
