The proposed Enbridge pipeline extension project that could see the transportation of oil going from North Westover in Hamilton, Ontario through Montreal and then on to Quebec has Vaudreuil-Soulanges concerned since the new pipeline would traverse through the off island municipalities of Rigaud, Pointe Fortune, Sainte Justine de Newton and Tr\u00e8s Saint R\u00e9dempteur.<\/p>\n

Vaudreuil-Soulanges is a regional government body comprised of a number of off-island towns and cities and last week shared its views at the National Energy Office.<\/p>\n

“Vaudreuil-Soulanges wants to be assured that all of the various laws and conditions for the pipeline are respected by Enbridge before we give the greenlight for the project,” said Jean Lalonde, mayor of Tr\u00e8s Saint R\u00e9dempteur and MRC prefect.<\/p>\n

\nA letter dated from March 2013 from the National Energy Office noted deficiencies for emergency braking systems at 117 of the country’s 125 pumping stations, a worry for the MRC considering the recent tragedy that occurred this summer in Lac M\u00e9gantic. <\/p>\n

With the Enbridge pipeline, Vaudreuil-Soulanges finds a lack of collaboration and information on the proposed project, especially when it comes to areas of safety and accessibility during a wintertime emergency.<\/p>\n

“The parliamentary commission did not reassure us,” said \u00cele Perrot Mayor Marie-Claude Nichols and Vaudreuil-Soulanges prefect. “We demand that the Quebec government reassure us on these issues before signing off on the Enbridge project.” <\/p>\n
