At a special council meeting held last week in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Mayor Paola Hawa and council placed a reserve on the building in the eastern portion of the city’s entrance triangled between Ste. Anne, Lalonde and St. Pierre streets. The moratorium has been imposed so that the owner cannot alter, improve or demolish the property that currently houses a laundry mat, a few apartments and an empty location that has sat unrented for many months. <\/p>\n

“We are reviewing the feel and look of Ste. Anne street and are looking to use the land in question for more recreational purposes for residents and tourists alike,” Mayor Paola Hawa told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

The mayor noted that placing a reserve on a building or portion of land is “usually a precursor for expropriation. This gives us time to plan a vision for the area, crunch numbers and analyze possible projects.” <\/p>\n

The city had originally “received some pressure to change the zoning to put up condos but we want to give that back to the city as that building has been more empty than full over the last 20 years,” Hawa said. <\/p>\n

The city also plans to do something about the chronically empty retail places that dot that end of the city. “We want the village to come to life and prosper,” said Hawa. <\/p>\n
