Inspired by their colleagues\u2019 experience in 2012, more than twice the number of staff from Sanofi\u2019s Laval headquarters took time off, last week to help Moisson Laval provide for the city\u2019s neediest during the holiday period.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe worked in two shifts during the morning and afternoon, to prepare Christmas baskets,\u201d the pharmaceutical firm\u2019s spokeswoman Joanne Kennedy told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. \u201cEven our CEO came out and did a lot of heavy lifting, putting food into trucks and really getting involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur people are so into it,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were saying \u2018How fast can we do this so we can make even more Christmas baskets?\u2019 One of the supervisors had to slow us down at one point, because our people were so enthusiastic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe heard the stories about what these baskets mean to the people who receive them and their families,\u201d Kennedy added. \u201cIt was an important reminder of why it\u2019s important to make a contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The baskets were delivered to about 4,000 people in 1,850 Laval households, on Sunday, Dec. 22.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had 400 volunteers either on the road or helping to load cars all day long,\u201d Moisson Laval deputy CEO Jean Gagnon told The Suburban.<\/i>
\n
<\/i>\u201cWe get so much demand that it\u2019s hard for us to respond to more,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe limiting factor is physical space: the size of Moisson Laval\u2019s warehouse,\u201d Gagnon explained. \u201cIf we brought in any more food, it would paralyze operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
\u201cMetro, IGA, and Couche Tard helped a lot by donating fresh fruit and vegetables,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Gagnon added that a flood of volunteers from Laval businesses and other organizations made a decisive difference this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo prepare the Christmas baskets, we usually have to shut down for two weeks the emergency food aid that we provide throughout the year to about 150 different families per week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was touching,\u201d Gagnon observed. \u201cFood banks across Quebec are struggling, but in Laval, we\u2019re strong. We have a good network and the support of the business community here. We work very hard, but to have all these people come forward at this time of year is truly motivating. It inspires us to do even more.\u201d
