Following yet another McGill University Hospital Centre community information session that was held in St. Raymond\u2019s Center, residents learned that they will be forced to put up with at least two to three more years of daily traffic woes before they can expect their neighborhood\u2019s streets to return to normal. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that it\u2019s going to be difficult,\u201d said assistant Transport Quebec director Martin Giroux. \u201cBut I believe people will get used to the situation.\u201d
As far as the neighborhood\u2019s local residents are concerned, that situation means that most of them should get used to taking the bus, the metro or their bicycle to and from work, if they want to get back home in time for dinner.<\/p>\n

\nWhile residents already knew that they could expect at least another two years of traffic havoc because of Transport Quebec’s plan to demolish and replace St. Jacques\u2019 concrete overpass, many were surprised to hear that the road would be closed for 27 months, because the Transport Quebec’s plans now call for a massive new sewage diversion project that must be over and done with before work can begin to replace the overpass.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe borough\u2019s east-west axis is expected to be cut for the entire three-year period and its north-south axis is in for a rough time because the diversion work will require the immediate closure of two access ramps off the D\u00e9carie expressway.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAs of last weekend, both the westbound D\u00e9carie expressway entrance from Highway 20 as well as the southbound Highway 15 access ramp toward the Champlain Bridge will be closed to accommodate the sewage diversion project. <\/div>\n

To Transport Quebec’s credit, Giroux did outline plans to mitigate traffic congestion.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMany are already in place and the city also plans to open a new right-turn lane on eastbound C\u00f4te St. Luc Road, to facilitate access the southbound D\u00e9carie entrance ramp.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn addition, Transport Quebec plans to reopen the southbound D\u00e9carie exit ramp to improve traffic flow along Maisonneuve to improve access to the new hospital.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe city\u2019s transit authority also plans to open a new bus lane for the 90 and 104 bus routes that run along what will be an increasingly congested Upper Lachine Road.<\/div>\n

\u201cIt would have been nice had they started all of this work two to three years ago, when they were still building the new hospital,\u201d said Councillor Peter McQueen. \u201cNow it\u2019s going to get complicated, because the hospital is going to be opened next month and we still have three more years to go before traffic gets back to normal.\u201d <\/div>\n

As westbound traffic is already being diverted along the D\u00e9carie service road toward Upper Lachine Road, residents told The Suburban<\/i> that they are worried about all the impending flood of traffic through their hitherto quiet neighborhood. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw this coming years ago,\u201d said McQueen. \u201cNow it\u2019s here and we\u2019ve got to deal with it.\u201d
