Laval\u2019s transit authority will deliver Mayor Marc Demers promise to the city\u2019s seniors, starting in May.<\/p>\n

During last year\u2019s municipal campaign, he promised that Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Laval<\/i> (STL) would waive its bus fare for senior citizens during rush hour.<\/p>\n

However, the measure that city councillors approved when they ratified Laval\u2019s 2014 budget during its Dec. 2 council meeting went much further, providing for seniors to travel free-of-charge at all times. However, the free fares haven\u2019t been implemented yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to do a lot of work before it starts,\u201d explained STL spokeswoman Marie-C\u00e9line Bourgault. \u201cWe have had to take time to organize everything needed to provide the free service and to ensure that all the city\u2019s senior citizens know that it\u2019s available.\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained that STL intends to launch an advertising and information campaign, starting in late March or early April. The objective will be to advise all Laval residents that free transit service will be available to seniors commencing in May. It will also invite eligible residents who don\u2019t yet have a senior\u2019s pass to register to get one of the identification cards.<\/p>\n

\nThe registration process is slated to start in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe plan to inform the population where they can get a card and what they need to do to obtain one,\u201d Bourgault said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know exactly how many people will take advantage of the new privilege, but we think that\u2014if we commence in April\u2014we ought to have enough time to furnish everyone who will need one with one of these identification cards.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNew senior citizen cards will remain valid for a period of seven years,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

Mayor Demers’ spokesman Fran\u00e7ois Brochu told The Suburban<\/i> that the free fare policy will only apply to Laval residents. <\/p>\n
