Changes coming to Quebec <\/i><\/b>health care act?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

With fewer hospital beds in the near future, McGill University Hospital Centre (MUHC) wants Laval residents to go for treatment closer to home.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s called repatriation of clientele,\u201d quipped the superhospital\u2019s public affairs and strategic planning director Richard Fahey, \u201cto ensure that patients are treated as close as possible to home and [only] come to MUHC when they need very specific treatment not available elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRoughly 10 per cent of our patients come from Laval, the Laurentian and Lanaurdi\u00e8re regions,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. \u201cThe question is: should they [instead] be treated there, rather than at the MUHC?\u201d <\/p>\n

He allowed that Laval, West Island residents and those of other outlying regions, \u201cwould remain the mandate of MUHC and the Centre hospitalier de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al (CHUM), when they are very sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compounds dearth of English service<\/b><\/p>\n

Laval residents have for decades voted with their feet, heading over the bridge in droves, due to the difficulty of getting health care service here in English. <\/p>\n

Fahey contended that this has clogged MUHC\u2019s emergency rooms with regional itinerants seeking treatment in English. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge that we have is that patients may come to a bilingual Montreal institution like MUHC, but\u2014given our mandate and the level of care that they require\u2014they could be better served closer to home,\u201d he suggested. \u201cInstead of spending 15 hours in the emergency room with a non-life-threatening illness, if you went to your local physician clinic or hospital closer to home, you might have less wait time.\u201d <\/p>\n

Legislation pending?<\/b><\/p>\n

Fahey disclosed that MUHC is currently exploring, together with Quebec\u2019s health ministry and regional health authorities, how this arrangement could be formalized. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s also [their] responsibility to structure [health care service] to provide optimum care for patients,\u201d he reminded. <\/p>\n

\u201cRemember, in the health act, patients [currently] have the right to go to the [health care] institution of their choice,\u201d Fahey acknowledged. \u201cThey have the right to go where they want, to seek what\u2019s most effective, from the patient\u2019s point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nRegions face influx<\/b><\/p>\n

Besides the challenge of ramping up their ability to serve patients in English, The Suburban<\/i> asked Fahey whether outlying health care facilities have the capacity to absorb the influx of hordes of patients who hitherto were treated in Montreal. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn our discussions with them, they have indicated that they are willing,\u201d he replied, \u201cand they said that they are capable of taking on such a load.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOur discussions are ongoing,\u201d he added, \u201cbut no one has said \u2018No, we cannot take them.\u2019\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n
