V\u00e9g starts off new year in new location<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

On the same day that Karen Messier found out the home base for her monthly meetings with her grassroots group V\u00e9g was closing its doors; she found out that the Ste. Anne de Bellevue Coop du Grand Orme<\/i> was moving to a larger venue, the Simon Fraser House. <\/p>\n

With the increased capacity and interest in offering workshops, Messier, who is also a Beaconsfield councillor, had a new spot for her vegetarian group.<\/p>\n

“We were previously meeting at the Coop des Bons Voisins <\/i>in Pointe Claire but since it closed, we were forced to find another meeting spot,” noted Messier. <\/p>\n

V\u00e9g has been around for more than a year and each monthly rendez-vous begins with an update on animal advocacy issues such as new pertinent petitions and animal rights and animal legislation. “The group is a mix of vegans, vegetarians and those who are in transition away from animal-based foods. Some people come because they are “veg-curious,” explained Messier. <\/p>\n

The meetings also discuss the benefits of vegan and vegetarian cuisine as well as deconstructing the notion “that all vegetarian food is bland,” Messier told The Suburban.<\/i> “We bring in guest speakers, many of whom are cooks who bring in vegetarian dishes that surprise those who have never tried this kind of way of eating before or were always told it was tasteless.” <\/p>\n

Messier has noted an increased interest and awareness of eating vegetarian. “There are more and more documentaries rom mainstream media showing the horrors of animal farm abuse or how meat and eggs are brought to the public <\/p>\n

V\u00e9g will be part of the Coop’s Foodie Tuesday series and their first meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, starting at 7 p.m. Guest speaker will be Vanessa Percher of Beaconsfield’s Chef Veganessa.
